In first place you should set up a password.
Go to: Settings > General > Passcode Lock
The default is to have a four character passcode, all numbers. When the passcode lock is turned on, a person who picks up your iPad cannot use it without entering the four digit password.
The iPad offers additional security to keep your data safe from prying eyes.
From Settings > General > Passcode Lock > turn on Erase all Data. If someone tries to guess your passcode, the iPad erases all data after 10 unsuccessful attempts.
When you setup your device you can turn on the find my iPad option.
If you did not activate it at set–up go to: Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone
Then you can go to www.icloud.com. Log in and select Find my iPhone to reveal its location.
Privacy settings let you see and control which apps and system services have access to:
Turn off personal information access to specific apps:
Settings > Privacy > Click into Specific App > Toggle Off
Turn off location services information (GPS), Wi–Fi & Cellular tracking to specific apps:
Settings > Privacy > Location Services > Select Specific Apps > Toggle Off
Remember: the same rules that apply to standard computers still apply to iPad on free Wi–Fi hotspots. The information your device sends across a Wi–Fi network is not anonymous, so avoid any online banking or financial tracking in free Wi–Fi.
Play Sound: Play a sound for two minutes.
Lost Mode: You can immediately lock your missing iPad with a passcode and send it a message displaying a contact number. Your iPad also tracks and reports its location, so you can see where it’s been when you check the Find My iPhone app.
Important: To use these features, Find My iPhone must have been turned on in iCloud settings on your iPad before it was lost, and iPad must be connected to the Internet.
You can set restrictions for some apps and for purchased content. For example, parents can restrict explicit music from being seen on playlists, or prevent the installation of apps.
Turn on restrictions: Go to Settings > General > Restrictions, then tap Enable Restrictions. You’ll be asked to define a restrictions passcode that’s necessary in order to change the settings you make. This is distinct from the passcode for unlocking iPad.
Important: If you forget your restrictions passcode, you must restore the iPad software.
Before you begin installing any old app that comes your way, be sure to read the application access request for permission agreement. This often–overlooked agreement contains valuable information regarding specific permissions on how the app accesses your device.
